Media Mill is looking into starting their own weekly magazine and has asked you to carry out research into how content is selected and constructed to appeal to a specific target audience. They have asked you to produce a case study comparing two different magazines in order to gain an understanding of how these magazines were constructed with their target audience in mind.
For this assignment the two magazines I will be looking at aim their magazines at a different target audience from each other. Firstly, I will be looking at how Kerrang! target their audience and how the target audience for Kerrang! is different to the target audience in the Heat Magazine.
Kerrang! magazine have a lot of brand extensions, these are; Download Festival, Kerrang! Awards, Kerrang! Radio and Kerrang! TV.
The font that is used on the masthead is designed to looked broken and cracked, this links you to the idea of onomatopoeia that 'Kerrang!' sounds like the crashing of a symbol, this also connects the style of music that the magazine is aimed at. Also, the mast head font is well known and is recognisable to most readers and even to people that aren't very familiar with Kerrang! As the logo is well known they are able to place and image going over the top of the text as people will still know that the magazine is Kerrang!. The white colour also stands out against the black background. The main image on the front cover is spread across as the this shows that this is the main article inside of the magazine, if there is a band that is used as the main image on the cover and its unknown to the customers, the cover line is anchorage. The clothing that Gerard Way is wearing on the image is like a smart casual. The image doesn't come across as 'fun' as the story line is about the emotional year that he's had over the last year, so they've made the image look more serious but with a sort of edge to it.
The banner that is above the mast head is used so that it can create more attention, it includes
The text is white on top of a black background, this makes the text stand out more, and the 'Gerard Way' title with it being yellow helps it stand out more from all the white text, 'His life- changing year! In his own words and pictures' the 'life-changing' and 'own' are the colour red, this is to emphasis importance of the article. The smaller images that you see on the cover are samples of the full size posters that you will find inside the magazine. They are anchorage to the cover line 'Shots of the year, poster pull out!' and 'Inside the photo diaries of...'. The images are a lot smaller than the main image.
When it comes to the content inside of the magazine, a house style is shown again with the use of the colour themes that is used for the articles and the layout of the pictures. On this article, the image of the article covers the whole side of right page and the article covers the over side of left with a eye catching title for the main article of this issue of Kerrang!.The image that is used in this article creates anchorage as to who the article is talking about, also the heading is much larger and is in a different font too the rest of the text to capture the attention of the reader.
The article has been separated into three different columns to keep with the conventions of a typical article as well as creating easier reading that can be spaced out appropriately. In the middle column of the article above the actual article in speech bubbles there is a quotation, this is bigger than the rest of the text as it's something that Gerard has mentioned in his interview with Kerrang! and the editors make this larger to draw someone into reading the article.
Heat:
Heat is a popular weekly issue magazine. The magazine is published by Bauer Media. Heat is a gossip and celebrity magazine that is aimed at young to middle aged women and keeps you up to date with all the celebrity gossip. It is is aimed more at the mainstream audience as most women are interested in stories that are printed in Heat, not many males are interested in the up, close and personal lives of celebrities. Each issue of Heat magazine follows the same codes and conventions, and each issue is some similar to each other with the way the structure is set out. The idea of Heat is that celebrities' lives and their activity should be broadcasted to the world and they make their profits from celebrity relationships, lives and scandal, this is what makes it so popular to the younger audience.
The cover story on Heat is always advertised boldly, like for example in this issue the main story is 'Posh's New Year Dilemma' with this being the main story of the article they will make sure it has more advertisement to grab the readers attention. Dotted around the side of the cover, they have other little stories and have a bold tagline so that you will feel the urge to read the articles and but the issue.
The representation of Heat magazine is that it is fun, action packed, exciting and scandalous. The reasons for this is because of the bold images and text that they on the covers and the colours that it consists of also.

The masthead for Heat Magazine is always the same design, this is because just like Kerrang! their masthead is well known and can be recognisable from any reader of the magazine and even people who do not read the magazine. Its bold, the fonts big and the colours a bright red so it catches your eyes straight away. The tagline just above the masthead is always the same, it used to be 'This week's hottest celebrity news' but in this issue the tagline is 'If it's not in heat, it didn't happen!', the reason why these are kept the same is because the codes and conventions don't change throughout each issue, they are always set out the same but just consist of different and more newer celebrity stories.
The pug of this magazine is above the magazines logo 'heat' and below the tagline above on the mast head, the pug allows you to see what issue number magazine it is and date it was released, for example this issue that i am looking at is issue 546 and the date is the 15th-21st January 2015.
The structure of Heat magazine is that it is in different sections all throughout the issue and especially on the cover, each section has a different background colour which ends up making the issue and cover clash, but this is what makes the magazine more recognisable as it grabs the audiences attention more.
How media producers construct magazines for specific audiences or how audience research is used to gather feedback
Media producers construct magazines for specific audiences by collecting research on their audiences so they know what to include content wise, this is so that their audience stay interested in reading the magazine. There are many different ways media producers gather their feedback, ranging from focus groups- with a focus group this helps them get a certain amount of information they need, they can dig deeper into the answers they get from the questions they ask the people who participate in the focus group and they can also get honest answers and opinions, media producers will find people who are in the targeted age range of their product to take part. They can also get their information from sending out questionnaires and surveys, from this they can't get an honest or fully reliable answer as they don't know whether people are actually thinking about the answers they put down or just selecting anything, also they can't determine the amount of feedback they're going to get so it might not be useful to them with knowing about what the audiences want or prefer to read about in magazines.
